THE HOWARD
DC’s Black Carnegie Hall
A stop on the Black Power Historical Trail, The Howard Theater was the first black-owned theater in the country.
The Howard was known as “the theater for the people” and an anchor of DC’s Black Broadway, it was a sanctuary for black culture, pride, and excellence during the Jim Crow Era.
Pre-dating The Apollo, The Howard has hosted practically every major black artist throughout its history.
As a young performer, Duke Ellington got his start there and later returned in 1931 for The Howard’s reopening as an established musician. Later in the 30s, the new building manager held an amateur musician contest that helped to launch the careers of Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Eckstine.
In 1962 as a motown hotspot, The Supremes had their first show outside of the Detroit area on The Howard’s Stage.
At Co-Lab, The Howard is one of the first floor conference rooms along 16th Street NW that can combine to host meetings of up to 100 meeting participants.
Day TwoTHE LINCOLN
Together, we pause to consider our goals, hopes, and direction. This is about aligning with ourselves and with the journey ahead. This is a chance to reconnect with what brought you here—your questions, your hopes, your turning points—and consider how they’ve shifted or deepened.
